The Landscape of Sagnlandet Lejre

The natural environment of Land of Legends - Lejre is one of idyllic beauty.

Visiting the Land of Legends offers the opportunity to experience a typical Danish landscape far from the hectic pace of the city and to learn about it at the same time.

A dead-ice landscape

Sagnlandet Lejre is situated in an area of small but steep hills surrounding lovely lakes. It was the last Ice Age which shaped the landscape here and has made the territory of Land of Legends such a unique place today!

During the last part of the Ice Age, which ended approximately 12,000 years ago, the kilometer-thick ice cap slowly melted away. At some spots, as in the Land of Legends, enormous lumps of ice remained for a longer period of time. During this period huge quantities of gravel and stone accumulated around these ice blocks, enough to form the hills, you can admire here. The holes, remaining after the ice lumps had completely melted, have since filled with water leaving the small lakes you can see at Land of Legends.

After the end of the Ice Age, the area became fully covered by forest. Then man began to remodel the landscape by felling primeval forest and cultivating the soil.

Swamps, wet areas, forests of beech and elm, maple, oak and hazel still provide an ideal natural habitat for birds, mammals, fishes, insects and mussels to thrive in.

When you come to Lejre, keep your eyes, ears and mind open to see, listen and experience our fascinating nature!
